Austria climate: current weather and forecasts

The climate in Austria is typically continental, with cold winters and warm summers, and generally does not hold any great surprises, but it is best to set out prepared and consult the weather forecast, especially if you are travelling by car in the winter months.

The cold is a fascinating element in Austria, a country that with its ultra-modern ski slopes and numerous indoor cultural attractions also lends itself well to being visited in winter.

Beware, however: although the general rule of a cold winter with snowfall and a warm (not hot) summer applies almost everywhere, it is possible to distinguish three regions in Austria with micro-climatic differences: Carinthia has a more temperate climate, the eastern region has more marked temperature differences between summer and winter, and the area north of the Alps has a more typically continental climate. Also bear in mind that, as you can imagine, the mountain regions have a longer winter, with heavy rainfall, and a shorter summer.
